But as with any major purchase or life decision, its crucial to have a strong idea of what you want before deciding. Prepare ahead of time for information sessions by determining what you want from your college experience and finding ways to measure the school against that during the session. Schedule your session Most schools allow prospective students to register for information sessions online, and they often recommend doing so at least three weeks in advance. After scheduling, make sure to note the location, time, cancellation policy, and contact information of the session in your calendarthat way, if something comes up or you have to rush to get there the day of, youll be prepared! Make a checklist Next, sit down with your family and make a list of what you want from the school you ultimately choose. What kind of social life are you hoping for? Are large student-to-teacher ratios okay with you, or will it make learning difficult? Think about issues like tuition costs, scholarship and internship opportunities, campus safety, dorm quality, a focus on faculty research versus teaching, or even the climate. Next, turn that list into a checklist that you can bring to each schools information session. It might be best to separate items on the checklist into needs vs. wants. If possible, you could even contact a current student to learn about his or her experience. If anything seems inconsistent or confusing, make a note of it. If youve already visited a campus or two, think back to information that surprised you or excellent questions that other students or parents asked during the tour, and add those to your list. Extend and reinforce your personal brand.  You can’t and shouldn’t hide your expertise.   Many people either think their work speaks for itself or that talking about their expertise is bragging.   First, you can’t count on who will observe your great accomplishments, so it is your job to help people know what you’ve accomplished.   Second, bragging has many characteristics to it, but mostly it is boastful, arrogant and excessive. You are smart enough to avoid doing that obnoxious behavior.   By extending your brand on LinkedIn, you help people to understand who you are in more depth rather than simply categorizing you based on your profession.   In LinkedIn, you can define your brand all over the place in your profile and you can weigh in on your industry and profession in LinkedIn groups, which will further allow people to see what you bring to the party.   This also gives you valuable visibility. 4. Positive ACT Changes for ADHD Students Standardized tests like the ACT can be extremely challenging for students with ADHD. The exams are long, requiring a level of sustained focus that is difficult for many students with ADHD to achieve. These are also not forgiving of careless mistakes, which are a hallmark symptom of ADHD. And they require students to perform well across multiple subject areas, which can be stressful for students with ADHD, who often have marked strengths and weaknesses. Changes to the ACT, coming in September 2020, may help students with ADHD better manage some of these test-taking challenges. While the content of the ACT will remain the same (with English, math, reading, science, and writing sections), students will have the option to retake individual sections of the exam without having to retake the entire test. The first time they take the ACT, all students will still be required to complete the exam in its entirety. But with section retesting, any time they retake the exam, they can choose which sections they want to complete. This can mean completing only one section during a testing session, or two or three sections if they prefer. So, if a student scores well on the English and reading sections and poorly on the math and science sections, for example, they can be more focused in their study efforts and retake only the math and science portions of the exam. For students with ADHD, who tend to have less predictable test performance, this means that they will not need to worry about putting their stronger section scores (like English and reading, in our example) in jeopardy when they retake the exam. Theres no limit on how many times a student can retake sections of the exam, but there are of course fees that apply, and the cost of multiple retakes can add up. When reporting scores to colleges, students will have the option of selecting their highest individual section scores along with an ACT Superscore, which is a composite score that reflects the average of the four best subject scores from each of the test attempts. So, colleges will have no indication of how many times a student completed each section. A more minor change to the test will also help students with ADHD who may need to retake a section more than once. Students who take the computer-based version of the test will receive their score within just two days. With this quick turn-around, students will know which sections to focus on during the retest and can study and retake the sections fairly quickly, leaving enough time for an additional retake if its needed. Standardized testing is stressful for all students, and it is especially stressful for students with ADHD. The upcoming changes to the ACT wont eliminate all the stress, but they will help students with ADHD overcome some of the unique challenges that come with taking college admissions exams. ABOUT DR. It’s your first day on the job, your manager has just finished explaining something a little too quickly, and you’re a ball of nervous energy. You aren’t 100 percent sure how the rest of the day will play out, and you just have a feeling that you’re going to mess up at some point. Take a deep breath and try to relax. Seeing as you’re the new kid on the block, you’re most likely not expected to pick up on everything right away. From time to time, you may even be expected to get confused or do something wrong. But it’s okay you are only human. If you have questions about something, it’s usually better to ask for clarification rather than fumble your way through. By keeping in mind that you’re allowed to make mistakes occasionally, you’ll realize from your first job that you are not expected to be perfect … and that will take a huge load off your shoulders. 2. Your attitude says a lot about you. Even if you’re not necessarily the most productive or most efficient at your job, you could still be known for having the best attitude in your workplace. Your approach to certain tasks allows others to recognize you for your positive attitude and your willingness to do well. If you show that you are eager, ready and willing to learn, and optimistic, that speaks volumes about what kind of person you are, which definitely goes off well with your boss and colleagues. What’s even more significant is that this lesson follows you outside of your job to other aspects of your life as well. Whatever your own method of note-taking may be, it’s always important to jot down the important things. For example, if your first job is in a corporate office where you need to attend many tedious meetings, carrying around a notebook and pen is definitely a good idea. You probably won’t need to write down everything that’s being said, but having something to jot down notes can be extremely useful, especially when there’s a lot of material being discussed and you’ll need to remember it for later. 4. Paying attention to detail is important. No matter where you work, there will always be minutiae of the job that someone needs to pay attention to. Being detail-oriented in everything you do also reveals a lot about who you are, both as an employee and as an individual. If you are that person who pays attention to the little things and does everything meticulously, your actions will pay off in the future maybe not necessarily in your first job, but perhaps in other jobs that follow. 5. Hard work is supposed to be hard. “Hard work” means different things for different jobs, but when push comes to shove, you have no choice but to just do it. After all, your first job is most likely not going to be all butterflies and rainbows you may cry, you may feel frustrated and bewildered, you may even hate everything about it. But having the endurance to push through will leave you with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that you somehow did it despite the challenges you faced.
